New Castle Launches Recycle Rewards Program
The Town of New Castle, in partnership with Waste Management, launched a recycling rewards program on January 2, 2010 for those New Castle residents currently not enrolled in the town’s residential recycling service. The goal of the program is to increase participation in the town’s recycling service – a free service provided as part of town’s residential trash services.

“For those New Castle residents who have not yet signed up for recycling, this is a great opportunity to be eligible to win $100 cash or a free upgrade recycling toter from Waste Management,” said Mary Lou Haflinger, Town of New Castle's Environmental Advisory Committee Secretary and Recycling Subcommittee member. “This incentive program does not adversely impact the town’s budget and there is no cost to sign-up.”

Every quarter during 2010, Waste Management will randomly select a name from residential curbside recycling residents who have newly signed up for recycling services during that quarter. The winning resident will receive $100 OR a recycling toter upgrade (excluding animal resistant containers), and will be named that quarter’s winner.

Quarter 1 eligible participants will include those who signed up for recycling services during January, February, or March of 2010; Quarter 2 eligible participants will include those who signed up for recycling services during April, May, or June of 2010; Quarter 3 eligible participants will include those who signed up for recycling services during July, August, or September of 2010; and Quarter 4 eligible participants will include those who signed up for recycling services during October, November, or December of 2010. The winning resident will receive a notification letter indicating that they have been selected.

“We are very excited to launch Recycle Rewards in partnership with the Town of New Castle,” said Randy Johnson, district manager of Waste Management’s New Castle services. “It will be the first Waste Management program of its kind in Colorado; and has been the forward-thinking, ‘can do’ attitude of the New Castle residents that have made this possible.”

The Town of New Castle Recycle Rewards Program began January 2, 2010, and will run through December 31, 2010. To sign-up for Recycle Rewards, contact Waste Management at 970-384-6223.

New Castle leads the way in idling reduction efforts
The Town of New Castle’s Climate Action Advisory Commission (CAAC) is spearheading an effort to reduce excessive vehicle idling. Town Councilors and staff have signed pledges not to idle their vehicles longer than 30 seconds, except when necessary for safety reasons.

Community members are invited to take their own pledges on the Town’s website.

Not only will this program help the Town work toward reduction goals outlined in its recently adopted Climate Action Plan, reducing idling will also help improve air quality and protect public health. Emissions from idling have been found to aggravate breathing problems, like asthma, especially in children and seniors.

The New Castle idling reduction program is serving as a pilot test for Garfield County’s Public Health Department. The CAAC is also working with area schools to encourage parents and school bus drivers to reduce idling to protect students’ health.
